Recipe for Pumpkin Spice

Who’s been going hard on the PSLs lately?

I haven’t had any PSLs this season (yet), but I did go into a Trader Joes the other day and my jaw nearly dropped to the floor… it was like pumpkin spice had exploded everywhere! It’s in all kinds of foods these days! Pumpkin spice breads, cookies, jams, soups, sauces, teas, coffees, even pumpkin spice covered almonds. And hey, I’m not complaining! I’m just amazed.

It got me thinking… turning anything into a pumpkin spice dish can be super simple. All you need to know is how to make pumpkin spice. So that’s what we’re doing today!

And guess what— it’s incredibly easy. “Pumpkin spice” is simply an agreed upon term for combining the following four spices: cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and clove. Some people add allspice as well. That’s it!

A good rule of thumb would be a large amount of cinnamon, medium amount of ginger, and small amounts of clove and nutmeg (and allspice if using).

Want an exact recipe?

Combine the following powdered spices:

-1 tsp cinnamon

-1/2 tsp ginger

-1/4 tsp nutmeg

-1/4 tsp clove

Combine the ingredients in a small mason jar (or maybe an old spice jar!) stir or shake well and then keep it in your spice cupboard. Try adding a small amount to your usual cooking to pumpkin spice things up!

I’m gonna try adding some to oatmeal. :)
