Healthier Lactation Cookies Recipe

Lactation cookies are all the rage these days, so today I’m giving you a healthier version for a lactation cookies recipe! These treats are free of gluten, dairy, soy, and processed sugar.

What are lactation cookies?

Lactation cookies are simply cookies that include ingredients that are known to help increase milk supply. Could you make lactation soup, lactation casserole, or lactation oatmeal instead? Yes, yes you could. But everyone loves cookies!

Are they necessary?

In my professional opinion as an herbalist and nutritionist, I don’t think lactation cookies are necessary for healthy breastfeeding. However, some mamas do struggle with low supply so why not give it a try (along with proper nutrition and seeking help from a lactation consultant). Plus, every breastfeeding mama needs to eat! And treats you can eat with one hand reign supreme while breastfeeding.

When should you make these?

Try making a double or triple batch of these in your final weeks or months of pregnancy as part of your postpartum meal prep. They’ll store safely in your freezer for about four months or longer. Learn more about optimal timing for doing your postpartum freezer meal prep here.

Without further ado, here’s the recipe!

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted

  • 1/2 cup maple syrup (or other natural sweetener of choice like honey or coconut sugar)

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/2 cup gluten-free rolled oats

  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.

  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted coconut oil, natural sweetener, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.

  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until a dough forms.

  5. Fold in the gluten-free rolled oats, dark chocolate chips, nuts (if using), and dried fruit (if using), until they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.

  6. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

  7. Gently flatten each cookie with the back of a spoon or your hand.

  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.

  9. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack or plate to cool completely.

  10. Once cooled, store the lactation cookies in an airtight container.
